The City of Calgary says a permit is typically required when a rear-yard fence is higher than 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches), a front-yard fence is higher than 1.2 metres (4 feet), a fence inside a corner visibility triangle is higher than 0.75 metres (2 feet 6 inches), or a gate is higher than 2.5 metres (8 feet 2 inches).
